Practical buying guide

How to buy better meat online without overpaying

Before you buy, compare the total delivered cost—not just the advertised price. Here's a five-minute checklist you can use at any retailer.

Five checks before checkout

  1. Match the cut. Compare ribeye to ribeye, ground beef to ground beef—not a premium steak to a bulk mixed box.
  2. Calculate delivered price per pound. (Cart subtotal + shipping + applicable fees − discounts) ÷ edible pounds delivered.
  3. Read the production claim. Grass-fed, grass-finished, pasture-raised and organic are not interchangeable. Look for specifics about the product you're buying.
  4. Check fulfillment. Confirm delivery area, frozen versus fresh arrival, packaging, and the policy for damaged or delayed shipments.
  5. Check the return or refund policy. Perishable items often have special rules.
